The Commercial Appeal: Columbus, Indiana-based diesel engine manufacturer Cummins has plans to move about a hundred jobs from Memphis to Mexico by November. 200 of its workers will remain at the Tennessee plant which is slated for a $3 million overhaul for turbocharger refurbishment. Jobs relating to the rebuilding of water pumps and compressors will be heading south of the border to San Luis Porosi, said a company spokesperson.
Layoffs will begin at the end of this month and continue through November. Company brass claim the job cuts are based purely on a decision to increase operations efficiency. Despite the layoffs, nearly 1,400 Cummins employees will still have jobs in the greater Memphis area.
