Hoboken is facing a budget deficit that has resulted in 36 layoffs as well as 19 demotions.

18 low-level employees at Hoboken’s City Hall have received the axe in addition to 18 members of the Hoboken Police Department. The police department is feeling the effects of the budget crisis even further as they were forced to demote 19 of their senior police officers.

Kenneth Connoly, the director of the Division of State and Local Operations at the New Jersey Civil Service Commission, received a letter last week, citing officially, that the layoff plan had been approved by the state.

City Communications Director Juan Melli said last Thursday, “We’re going to provide employees with the layoff notices hopefully at the end of this week or early next week. We’re not going to announce anything before we inform them first.”
