Birmingham’s Board of Education will reconsider layoffs to Birmingham’s public schools that could affect even tenured staff members.
Paul Hubbert, the executive secretary for the Alabama Education Association, will hold a press conference in Birmingham on Tuesday, requesting that all school systems hold off on layoffs until the final passage of the federal Education Jobs Bill, a bill which may add funds to the system, saving many of those jobs.
Among those being considered for layoffs are custodians, secretaries, maintenance workers and cafeteria workers. Craig Witherspoon, a Superintendent for Birmingham’s public schools has already identified 21 positions to terminate, which would amount to a savings of $900,000.
This will be the third time the measure will be considered by the board.
