Korean shipping company Hanjin, the sixth-largest ocean carrier in the world, will be opening a new shipping terminal in Jacksonville, Florida. The 600 to 700 laborers required to build the $300 million freight terminal will come from the longshoreman’s union and is expected to pay a minimum of $50,000 . Some managerial positions will be selected by Hanjin from outside the pool of union workers.
Officials are excited about the economic implications of the new terminal, and estimate 4,000 jobs will be created indirectly in support of the expansion. The annual economic impact has been calculated to be around $1 billion.
Jacksonville won out over Savannah and Charleston as potential building sites. The timing of the project is intentionally coinciding with the expansion of the Panama Canal.
