Boston Medical Center is eliminating 119 workers to help offset $175 million in losses in the fiscal year that ends Sept. 30.
The Boston Globe reports the hospital has nearly 6,000 employees and the layoffs would account for just a fraction of the savings that is needed to balance the budget. However, a state request for additional Medicaid money is expected to be approved by the federal government later this year.
Boston Medical Center provides health services to the city’s neediest patients, according to the Globe. If the hospital cannot find enough additional funds, it is expected to run out of cash by next fall.
The 119 layoffs include 44 nurses and 30 management staff.
