More than 600 supermarket workers of the A&P chain are facing layoffs in New Haven, Connecticut.
A&P supermarkets in Branford, Middletown, Old Lyme, and Mystic are being closed down and account for 400 of the layoffs according to papers filed with the state Labor Department.
A Waldbaum’s in West Hartford accounts for an additional 200 layoffs.
Big Y announced plans to buy out seven A&P stores which triggered the layoff announcements. The Massachusetts-based company stated they must evaluate which sites to reopen as Big Y stores, acknowledging some may well remain closed.
