Genesee County to Lay Off up to 118

After adopting a new 2011/2012 budget yesterday, commissioners in Genesee county, Michigan announced the elimination of 118 county positions. 60 layoffs have already been announced over half a dozen county departments including sheriff (13 layoffs) and health (16 layoffs).

County Finance Committee Chairman Archie Bailey was grave in his remarks about the layoffs: “This is the most devastating budget this county has ever faced.”

Genesee county, which contains Flint, Michigan, had been facing an $18 million budget deficit before adopting the new budget.
